Joy: Finding Victory in Suffering

 
“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…. Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad…” (Matthew 5:10-12)
 
Jesus invited His first disciples to simply follow Him. There was something about Him that was magnetic, causing men to drop everything and follow regardless of the risks. Those who did embarked upon the most remarkable and surprising journey imaginable! Only those who truly follow this Savior discover the promised destiny of eternal significance, “And I will make you fishers of men.”

Compassion: Receiving the Ability to Care

 

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7).

I told a friend recently that I’m a recovering Type-A. What I mean by this is that compassion is not my natural default! I’m visionary, motivated, task-oriented, and determined… but I’m not naturally sensitive and caring. When that shows up inside me, I know that God is in the house!

Satisfaction: The Surprise Blessing of Character

 

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6).

Jesus seems to have the habit of surprising us. We crave one thing, and He comes along and says, “No, no; don’t crave that. Let Me show you what to crave because this will bring the satisfaction you are looking for.” This idea catches us off guard: we are more accustomed to spiritual darkness than light.

Mourning: Experiencing God’s Comfort

 

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).
 
This is one of those statements that only sounds good in church. In real life, few ever discover the “comfort”…and as a result, they discount what Jesus was teaching. No one ever comes right out and says as much, but if I could ask the angels, “How much traffic does this promise get?” I’m pretty sure they would say, “Not much!”
