Poor in Spirit: Our Access to God’s Provision

 

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
 
Are you getting comfortable with feeling poor in spirit? If so, you are on the right track. I tell men, “I don’t want to lead any man into combat who says he is not afraid. I want men who admit they are afraid but are comfortable with fear.” It works like this with being “poor in spirit”: getting comfortable over time.

The Greatest Man Ever Born

In taking a fresh look at John the Baptist, I am impressed at the extent of the revelations that had been given to him. His message, for starters, was the very launching pad for the gospel of Jesus, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt.3:2; 4:17).

 

He saw the deep flaws of the Jewish system that had replaced the simple faith of Abraham, and he boldly called out the power brokers of that system: the Pharisees and Sadducees.

I confess that I am addicted to those magical moments when God sovereignly orchestrates it so that I “accidentally” bump into someone He wants me to meet, to get to know, to help, or to lead to Christ. He has a reason, and somehow He entrusts you and me to partner with Him. Divine appointments.

Jesus Himself lived this way every day, all the time. He said, “The Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner” (John 5:19).
